Hydraulic hose structure is usually built in three functional layers: the inner tube, reinforcement and outer cover. Each layer solves a different problem. The tube seals the oil, the reinforcement holds pressure and the cover protects the hose from the outside environment.

1. Inner Tube
The inner tube contacts hydraulic oil directly. It must resist mineral oil, synthetic oil or special fluids depending on the equipment. If the tube compound is wrong, it may swell, crack, harden or contaminate the hydraulic system.
2. Reinforcement
Reinforcement is the pressure-bearing layer. It may be textile braid, one steel wire braid, two steel wire braids or multiple steel spiral layers. More reinforcement does not automatically mean better for every machine; it changes pressure rating, weight, flexibility and bend radius.

3. Outer Cover
The outer cover protects against abrasion, oil splash, ozone, weather, sunlight and handling damage. A smooth cover is easier to clean and mark. A wrapped cover is common in rugged outdoor service. Cover compound and thickness are more important than appearance alone.

Why Structure Affects Failure
Most hose failures are not random. Tube cracks may point to fluid or temperature problems. Wire exposure may point to abrasion. A burst near the fitting may point to pressure surge, incorrect crimping, twist or bend radius problems.

What is the strongest part of a hydraulic hose?
The reinforcement layer carries most of the pressure load. However, the hose assembly is only as safe as the matched tube, cover, fittings, ferrules and crimping process.
Can I identify hose pressure from the cover only?
Use the printed hose marking as a starting point, but confirm the datasheet by size. Pressure rating changes with hose ID.
