Excavator Hydraulic Hose Selection in Indonesia: R2 vs 4SP vs 4SH

Excavators in Indonesia work in quarry, mining, road construction, plantation, river work and general contractor sites. The same excavator may need different hydraulic hose families depending on whether the line is a medium-pressure return line, a boom cylinder line with frequent impulse, or a severe-duty high-pressure circuit exposed to abrasion.

Excavator hydraulic hose selection for Indonesian construction and mining jobsites
Excavator hydraulic hose selection should start from pressure, impulse, routing and fitting standard.

Quick Answer: When to Use R2, 4SP or 4SH

Hose familyTypical standardBest use on excavatorsSelection note
Two-wire braided hoseSAE 100 R2 / EN 853 2SNGeneral high-pressure lines, pilot or auxiliary circuits where OEM pressure allowsGood flexibility and practical cost; do not use when pressure surge exceeds hose rating.
Four-spiral hoseEN 856 4SPBoom, arm, bucket and attachment lines with higher impulse cyclesBetter impulse resistance than common braided hose; check bend radius and fitting series.
Four-spiral heavy pressure hoseEN 856 4SHHeavy excavators, rock breaking, mining attachments and severe pressure surge positionsUse when the circuit demands higher pressure class or severe-duty margin.

Pressure Rating Comparison

Dash sizeR2 / 2SN general range4SP general range4SH general rangePractical comment
-06 to -08High pressure, flexible routingHigher impulse marginOften higher pressure for severe serviceSmall excavator lines may still use R2 if OEM marking confirms it.
-10 to -12Suitable for many mobile linesCommon for boom and arm high-pressure linesUsed on heavy equipment and pressure surge circuitsConfirm machine pressure and old hose marking before changing family.
-16 and aboveLower pressure than spiral families in many sizesHeavy mobile hydraulicsSevere high-pressure heavy equipmentFor large machines, spiral hose is often safer for main pressure lines.

Equipment Operating Conditions Table

Excavator positionWorking conditionRecommended starting pointFailure risk to check
Boom cylinder lineRepeated lifting, high impulse, outdoor abrasion4SP or 4SH depending on OEM pressureCover rubbing, pressure spikes, tight bend radius.
Bucket / arm lineFrequent movement, rock impact, mud4SP / 4SH for heavy-duty; R2 for moderate circuitsTwisting during installation and external abrasion.
Hydraulic breaker lineStrong impulse and vibration4SH or severe-duty spiral hose after pressure checkEarly crimp leakage, fitting loosening, temperature rise.
Pilot or auxiliary lineLower flow and compact routingR2 / 2SN or compact hose if specification allowsWrong thread or over-bending in narrow routing.
Steel wire spiral hose for excavator boom arm and breaker hydraulic circuits
Steel wire spiral hose is commonly reviewed for severe pressure and impulse circuits.

Common Mistake: Replacing by Size Only

A hose with the same inside diameter is not automatically equal. Buyers should confirm working pressure, impulse demand, old hose marking, fitting type, ferrule type, routing and total assembly length. Replacing a 4SP or 4SH line with a two-wire braided hose can create early burst risk if the circuit pressure is too high.

Quotation Checklist for Indo Hydraulics

  • Excavator brand and model.
  • Old hose marking such as SAE 100 R2, EN856 4SP or EN856 4SH.
  • Inside diameter or dash size.
  • Overall assembly length and fitting angle.
  • Clear photos of both fitting ends and sealing faces.
  • Application position: boom, arm, bucket, breaker, travel, pilot or attachment line.
